A fire strategy drawing has to be read under pressure

Unlike almost any other drawing in a set, a fire strategy plan has a real chance of being consulted by someone during an actual emergency, whether that's a fire warden doing a headcount or a fire service crew orienting themselves on arrival, and that changes how it needs to be drafted compared to a general arrangement plan. Clarity beats detail every time here, and the blocks you choose need to read instantly at a glance, not reward someone who studies the drawing carefully.

That's a genuinely different design brief from most architectural drawings, where nuance and precision usually win, and it's worth keeping that distinction in mind before you start dropping standard blocks onto a fire strategy sheet without thinking about whether they actually communicate fast enough.

Escape route arrows and direction of travel

Direction of travel arrows are the backbone of any fire strategy plan, showing the route from any point in the building to the nearest final exit, and they need to be sized and weighted so they read clearly even at a reduced print scale on a laminated sheet pinned up near a fire panel. Layering fire strategy over the base building plan

Keep the fire strategy layer set entirely separate from your general arrangement layers, ideally as its own drawing derived from the architectural base rather than a heavily annotated version of the GA plan itself, because fire strategy drawings get updated on their own schedule as escape routes or occupancy figures change, and you don't want that revision cycle entangled with unrelated architectural updates. Freeze the architectural background as an xref and build your fire strategy annotation, arrows, stair fire ratings, refuge points, compartment lines, on top of it.

Compartment lines, showing fire rated separation between zones, are usually drawn as a distinct heavy dashed line and deserve their own layer too, kept visually distinct from both the escape arrows and the base building outline so a reviewer can isolate any one layer without the drawing turning into visual noise.

Common errors that undermine a fire strategy drawing

A few recurring errors are worth flagging specifically because they're easy to miss during a busy drawing issue. The third, and one I've seen cause a genuine hold up at building control stage, is a refuge point shown on the drawing without a corresponding note on staff or management procedure for how someone waiting there actually gets assisted, since the physical space alone doesn't satisfy the requirement if there's no described process behind it, and a strategy drawing that only shows the space without referencing that procedure invites exactly that follow up question.

Why legibility is the actual deliverable

At the end of the day the test for a fire strategy drawing isn't whether it's technically complete, it's whether someone unfamiliar with the building could look at it for ten seconds and understand where to go, and that standard should shape every block choice on the sheet. Right sizing the arrows, keeping the stair geometry accurate, and marking refuge points clearly isn't decoration, it's the actual function of the drawing, and it's worth resisting the temptation to cram in extra architectural detail that has nothing to do with the escape strategy itself.

I'd rather hand over a fire strategy drawing that a fire warden unfamiliar with the building could interpret correctly under pressure than one that impresses a design review meeting, and building every block choice, arrow weight, stair labelling, refuge symbol placement, around that standard is what actually makes the drawing useful the one day it might genuinely matter.
