When a simple rectangle beats downloading a block at all
Sometimes a placeholder rectangle drafts faster and reads clearer than a detailed block, especially early in a project.

Not every stage of a drawing wants detail
There is a stage in almost every project where downloading a beautifully detailed block is actually the wrong move, and it took me longer than I would like to admit to trust that instinct instead of reflexively reaching for the library every time furniture needed to go on a plan. Early schematic design, space planning, anything where you are testing whether a layout works at all rather than what it will ultimately look like, is often better served by a plain rectangle or a simple poche shape than by an actual detailed furniture block, and it is worth knowing why, especially once a plan starts filling up fast.
What detail actually costs at the wrong stage
A detailed block carries visual weight, cushion lines on a sofa, individual slats on a chair back, decorative elements on a lamp, and at schematic scale, when a plan might still change completely in the next design review, that detail is mostly noise. It draws the eye toward finished-looking furniture when the actual question on the table is still whether the room even works at that size, and worse, it can accidentally signal to a client or a reviewer that decisions have been made, exact furniture chosen, exact style locked in, that have not actually been made yet. A rectangle labeled sofa, roughly 2100 by 900, carries the necessary information, the footprint and rough size, without implying a level of decision-making that has not happened.
A simple circle stands in just as well for a person during early circulation studies, a rough 450 to 500mm diameter roughly matching shoulder width is plenty to check whether two people can comfortably pass each other in a corridor, without needing an actual Human Figure Plan 1 block placed dozens of times across a study that might get redrawn twice more before the layout is even close to settled.
There is a revision cost too that is easy to underestimate, a detailed block placed too early tends to get moved, deleted and reinserted repeatedly as a layout keeps changing through early design, and each of those cycles costs a little more time than doing the same churn with a plain rectangle would have, simply because there is more geometry, more layers, and sometimes more nested blocks being dragged around every time the layout shifts. Multiply that by a dozen pieces of furniture across several rounds of revision before a layout settles, and the placeholder approach's time saving compounds well beyond just the initial placement.
A worked example: three passes on the same room
A recent small office layout is a decent illustration of how this actually plays out across a project's life. Pass one, early space planning, used plain labeled rectangles for every desk and seating element, roughly 1400 by 700 for a standard desk, a 450mm circle for each person checking circulation clearance around the furniture, nothing more detailed than that because the layout itself was still very much in flux, walls moving, room count changing week to week. Pass two, once the client had signed off on the general layout and it moved to a presentation deck, swapped in real blocks for the pieces that mattered for the story being told, actual desk and chair blocks, a couple of Human Figure Plan 1 instances near the entrance for scale, but left storage and back of house areas as simple poche shapes since nobody reviewing that presentation needed to see filing cabinet detail to approve the general concept. Pass three, construction documentation, replaced everything down to the last placeholder, with a real static block behind every single piece of furniture on the sheet, because at that stage every footprint needed to be accurate for a clearance and code review. Three genuinely different levels of detail on what was, underneath it all, always the same room, and using a detailed block too early in pass one would have cost real drafting time for information the design review did not actually need yet.
Where a real block earns its place instead
The moment a layout is settled enough to move toward client presentation, or the drawing is heading into a construction document set where accurate furniture footprints matter for clearances and code review, a real detailed block, a Sofa Set Plan 1, a properly scaled Human Figure Plan 1 for circulation checks, genuinely earns the file weight and visual presence it brings. At this stage the detail is communicating something true, this is what will actually be there, rather than implying a false level of certainty too early.
Swapping placeholders out for real blocks is also a useful milestone marker on a project in its own right, treating that swap as a small deliberate step, rather than something that happens gradually and inconsistently across a set, forces a moment where someone actually confirms the layout is settled enough to commit to, which is a genuinely useful checkpoint to have built into a workflow.
A rule of thumb for which one you're looking at
Ask whether the furniture's exact identity matters yet for the decision being made on this sheet. If the question is purely whether a seating group fits in a given alcove, a rectangle at the right footprint answers that completely, and a detailed block answers it no more completely while taking longer to place and drafting heavier. If the question is whether this specific sofa, at its specific proportions, actually works with this specific room, you need the real block, because the rectangle genuinely cannot answer that question for you.
A useful habit is labeling the placeholder rectangle with its assumed footprint dimensions directly on the sheet, since that turns a vague shape into something genuinely useful for a reviewer checking clearances, without requiring the actual detailed geometry a finished block would bring.
On the office project above, every placeholder rectangle carried its assumed footprint as a small text label directly beneath it, desk at 1400x700 for instance, which meant a reviewer checking clearances during that first pass never had to guess what the rough shape actually represented, and swapping in the real block later was simply a matter of deleting the labeled rectangle and inserting the actual furniture block at the same insertion point.
How this plays out on a real site plan too
This same logic scales up to landscape and site work. A simple circle at the right canopy diameter can stand in for a tree during early massing studies far faster than placing dozens of detailed Pine Elevation blocks would, and it communicates the thing that actually matters at that stage, how much of the site this planting will eventually shade or screen, without the drafting overhead of full detail across a large area. Swap in the real blocks once the planting plan is closer to final and each individual tree's species and placement actually matters for the deliverable.
The same reasoning even applies to lighting during a very early reflected ceiling plan study, a labeled dot roughly where a fixture will go communicates layout intent for a first pass review just as well as an actual Wall Lamp or Ceiling Lamp block would, and it is a lot faster to move around when the whole ceiling layout is still genuinely up for discussion.
