The layout that has to work in three different configurations
A flexible event hall or banquet room is one of the more genuinely interesting drafting problems, because you're not designing one furniture layout, you're designing a room that has to reconfigure cleanly between at least a few different setups, rows for a lecture, rounds for a banquet, and cleared floor for a reception, often on the same day. Folding chair blocks are the tool that makes that flexibility possible, and drawing the room well means thinking in terms of repeatable spacing templates rather than a single fixed layout.
I've drafted a handful of these multipurpose halls, and the approach that actually works is building your CAD file so each configuration is a swappable block array rather than redrawing chairs from scratch every time the client changes their mind about the event format.
The folding chair block itself
A standard folding chair has a footprint typically around 450 to 500 millimetres wide by 450 to 550 millimetres deep, with a seat height in the usual 440 to 460 millimetre dining range, and the plan view block is about as simple as furniture geometry gets, which is exactly the point. Because folding chairs are meant to be moved, stacked, and reset constantly, the CAD block should stay equally simple, a clean footprint you can array quickly rather than an elaborately detailed elevation you'd use for a fixed dining chair.
Keep the block on its own dedicated layer so you can isolate, array, and delete entire rows in one operation when the layout changes, which it will, probably more than once before the drawing set is final.
Row spacing for a lecture or ceremony setup
For rows facing a stage or a front focal point, standard spacing runs about 900 millimetres row to row measured back to back, which gives roughly 350 to 400 millimetres of clear knee space between one row's chair back and the next row's seat front, tight enough to pack in seats but still generally workable for people to pass through when the row isn't full. If the event includes any aisle that doubles as an accessible or emergency egress route, check that width against local code requirements rather than a rule of thumb, since minimum egress aisle widths are jurisdiction specific and this is exactly the kind of dimension you don't want to guess on.
Centre aisles for a ceremony or lecture layout are typically planned wider than the row spacing itself, often 1200 millimetres or more, both for circulation and, in a wedding or ceremony context, so the aisle reads generously in photos and video.
Don't forget to build accessible positions into the row layout from the start rather than adding them after the grid is drawn, the wheel-chair-accessible-2 block on the site, filed under building symbols, is a genuinely useful reference for how much space to reserve at the end of a row or along an aisle, and it should be treated the same way in a folding chair grid as it would in any fixed seating plan, distributed rather than clustered, with a clear path back to the main aisle.
Round table setups for banquet configurations
Switch the same chairs to a banquet round layout and the spacing math changes completely, since now you're working around a round table rather than in linear rows. A typical banquet round seating eight to ten guests runs somewhere around 1500 to 1800 millimetres in diameter, and standard practice leaves roughly 1500 to 1800 millimetres of clearance from table edge to table edge across the room, enough for a chair to push back plus a server aisle to pass behind it.
Building this as a separate block array or a saved layer state in the same drawing, rather than a completely different file, makes it much faster to flip between the lecture and banquet configurations when a client wants to see both options during design review.
Storage and stacking, the part people forget to draw
Folding chairs need somewhere to actually live when they're not deployed, and that storage footprint is worth drawing into the plan even though it's easy to skip. A stacked folding chair storage cart or rack typically needs a floor footprint in the range of 600 to 800 millimetres wide by 1200 to 1500 millimetres long for a full cart of twenty or so chairs, and multiplying that out across however many chairs the room's capacity requires adds up to real square footage that needs a dedicated storage room or closet in the plan, not just an assumption that chairs will get stacked against a back wall.
I've seen this get missed on more than one project, a beautifully flexible room with nowhere sensible to actually put two hundred folding chairs between events, which defeats the whole point of specifying folding seating in the first place.
The path from storage to the floor matters too, whichever door or corridor the carts roll through needs enough clear width for the cart itself, generally at least 900 millimetres, and a route that avoids a tight turn a loaded cart can't make. It sounds like a minor detail next to the seating layout itself, but a storage room that's technically big enough yet impossible to actually wheel a full cart into or out of during a fast turnover between events is a genuinely common and entirely avoidable planning miss.
Building the drawing for fast reconfiguration
Set the folding chair block up as an array you can quickly duplicate and rotate rather than individually placed instances, use layers to separate your lecture layout, your banquet layout, and your reception clear-floor layout so you can toggle visibility between them in the same file, and always include a storage allowance in your total room program even if it feels like it's eating into usable floor area. A flexible event space is only as flexible as its worst configuration, and that's usually the one nobody bothered to actually draw.
Presenting the options to a client
When I'm showing a client a multipurpose hall for the first time, I usually print or export all three configurations, lecture, banquet, and cleared reception floor, on separate sheets rather than trying to cram a note explaining the flexibility onto one drawing, because most clients find it much easier to grasp the room's actual potential when they can see it laid out three distinct ways side by side rather than imagining it from a single static plan with a paragraph of explanation attached.
