FF&E is a counting exercise before it's a drawing exercise
Furniture, fixtures and equipment schedules live or die on accuracy, not beauty, and I say that as someone who has had a procurement team call back three times because a quantity on a schedule didn't match what was actually drawn on the plan. The whole point of an FF&E layout drawing is that every single symbol on it can be counted, tagged, and cross referenced against a spreadsheet, so before you even open a block library, decide on your tagging convention, something like SO 01 for the first sofa type, WL 01 for the first wall lamp type, because retrofitting tags onto a finished layout is miserable work.
Once that system is set, the block selection itself gets a lot simpler, because you're not hunting for the prettiest furniture block, you're hunting for the block whose proportions match the actual spec sheet from the vendor.

The pitfall I see most often on real projects isn't the initial tagging, it's what happens after, a client swaps a specified item mid project and the schedule gets updated but the drawing quietly doesn't, or the reverse, someone nudges a block on the plan during a coordination meeting and forgets to flag the corresponding schedule row. Build a habit of touching both documents together every time, even for a small change, because an FF&E schedule that's technically correct on the spreadsheet but out of sync with the drawing is arguably worse than one that's obviously wrong, since nobody catches it until the wrong item is already on site.
Lighting fixtures belong on the same layout
A lot of FF&E schedules split lighting off into a separate electrical or RCP drawing, but I find it's worth showing at least the decorative fixtures, wall mounted pieces especially, on the furniture layout too, because a wall lamp block gives the reviewer a sense of how a fixture relates to the furniture beneath it, whether a sconce clashes with the top of a sofa back for instance. Wall fixtures are typically specified in the 1000 to 1500 mm mounting height range depending on the room, and having the block correctly scaled on an elevation view alongside the plan catches those clashes before installation rather than after.

Tagging and numbering without breaking the drawing
Use AutoCAD's attribute definitions if your block library supports them, so each furniture instance can carry a visible tag that updates automatically, and if your blocks don't have attributes built in, a simple leader with a tag number pointing at each item works almost as well, it's just more manual to keep in sync. Whatever system you use, keep tags on their own layer so you can freeze them for a clean client facing version of the same drawing and thaw them again for the internal, schedule facing version.
Cross checking the drawing against the schedule
Once the layout is tagged, do a literal count, select all instances of each block type, per AutoCAD's own COUNT and QSELECT tools this is a fast filter by block name, and match that number against the schedule's quantity column. I do this pass every single time before a schedule goes out, because it's the cheapest possible moment to catch a missing or duplicated item, far cheaper than catching it after a purchase order has already gone to a vendor.
It's worth doing this count twice, actually, once part way through the drawing and once right before issue, because a partial count midway through catches a tagging mistake while there's still time to fix the convention across the whole plan, rather than discovering at the very end that half the sofas got tagged SO and half got tagged S, which then means a slow manual reconciliation instead of a clean filtered select.
Handling a mid project substitution without breaking the count
At the end of the day, FF&E specs change mid project more often than anyone plans for, a vendor discontinues an item, a client sees something they like better, and when that happens I update the block itself rather than deleting and re-inserting it fresh, keeping the same tag number so the schedule row it maps to doesn't need renumbering. Renumbering a tag partway through a project is one of the fastest ways to introduce a mismatch between the drawing and the schedule, since it's easy to update the tag on the drawing but forget the same change needs to happen on every reference to that item elsewhere, in a finishes schedule, a procurement tracker, or a client facing summary, so keeping tag numbers stable even through a substitution is worth the small inconvenience of a slightly less tidy sequential list.
Formats and keeping the file clean for handoff
FF&E drawings tend to get handed between interior designers, architects, and procurement teams who may not all be on the same CAD software, so per the DXF file format documentation, DXF is the safer export choice when the schedule needs to travel outside a pure AutoCAD workflow, while DWG stays the working file for anyone drafting directly. Purge unused blocks before either export, an FF&E drawing accumulates orphaned definitions fast as specs change mid project, and a bloated file is its own kind of error waiting to happen.
Don't forget exterior FF&E if the scope includes it, a gate block like an iron gate or exterior seating tagged with the same discipline as interior furniture, since exterior items live on a different sheet from the interior layout and are the category most likely to get missed on the final schedule count.
