Competition boards and construction sets need different levels of block detail. Here's how to choose the right geometry weight for each.

Two drawings, two completely different jobs

A competition board and a working drawing are answering different questions even when they're describing the exact same building, and that difference should shape which blocks you pull and how much detail you leave switched on inside them. A working drawing has to answer "can this be built," so a sofa block on a furniture plan just needs to be accurate in footprint and position, nobody on site is going to zoom into the stitching. A competition board has to answer "does this feel like a space someone wants to inhabit," so the same sofa block might need shading, a slightly richer outline, maybe a shadow cast beneath it to sell depth.

I've handed both kinds of drawings in for the same project in the same week and reused maybe sixty percent of the same block library across them, the trick isn't maintaining two separate libraries, it's knowing which layers inside a block to show or hide depending on which drawing you're building.

What working drawings actually need from a block

For a working or construction drawing, detail level should track exactly what a contractor or reviewer needs to verify, which is almost always footprint, clearance, and correct placement relative to walls and fixed elements. A downloaded sofa set plan block at this stage just needs to be the right overall dimension, typically somewhere in the 1900mm to 2200mm length range for a standard three-seater with a depth around 850mm to 950mm, sitting on its own furniture layer that can be frozen or printed at a lighter line weight than the walls.

Overadding detail here is actually counterproductive, extra hatching or texture on a furniture block in a permit set just adds file weight and visual noise to a drawing whose entire purpose is dimensional clarity. This is the same logic behind any good technical drawing convention, strip away anything that doesn't answer a build question and the drawing gets easier to check, not harder.

What a competition board needs that a working drawing doesn't

A competition or presentation board is judged in the first ten seconds by how it feels before anyone reads a single dimension, so this is where you want the richer version of the same blocks, human figure blocks with some articulation rather than plain silhouettes, tree elevation blocks with visible canopy texture instead of a simple outline circle, a wall lamp block rendered warm rather than left as a flat linework fixture. The catch here is that richer detail eats more of the viewer's attention, so you still want to be selective about where you spend it.

What I actually do on a board is pick two or three focal areas, usually the entry sequence and one interior vignette, and push detail level up specifically there while keeping the rest of the plan at a cleaner, more diagrammatic weight, so the eye has somewhere to land instead of being asked to process the same density everywhere at once.

Matching scale to detail level

Detail level and drawing scale are tied together whether people admit it or not, a block with fine internal linework that looks great at 1:50 turns into an illegible smudge at 1:200, and competition boards very often sit at a smaller scale, 1:100 to 1:200 for a whole floor plan or site plan, than a working drawing detail which might be pulled at 1:20 or 1:10 for a specific junction. Before you finalize which version of a block to use, check it at the actual plot scale you're printing, not just zoomed in on screen where everything looks fine.

An orthographic elevation printed at A1 size and a small inset plan on the same board can genuinely call for two different versions of the same tree or figure block, and that's completely normal, it's not inconsistency, it's matching representation to the resolution the viewer will actually see it at.

A practical workflow for switching between the two

Build your working drawing first, since it has to be dimensionally correct regardless of what else happens, then duplicate the file or the relevant sheet before you start dressing it up for a board, so you always have a clean, buildable version preserved separately from the presentation version. Swap in richer block variants where the board demands them, layer in shadow blocks and additional entourage for depth, and only then start adjusting line weights and colors for the final print.

Keep a simple naming convention, something like a suffix on the file distinguishing WD from CD, so nobody on the team accidentally submits the board version for permit or, worse, hands the client the bare-bones working drawing thinking it's the pretty one. At the end of the day both drawings are telling the truth about the same building, they're just telling it to two very different audiences.

A quick example: the same sofa block, two treatments

Take a single sofa set plan block as the concrete case, on a working drawing sheet it sits on its own furniture layer, plain outline, roughly 0.25mm weight, positioned to confirm clearance around it meets whatever minimum your project requires, nothing more. On a competition board using that exact same block, the geometry doesn't change at all, but you'd typically add a light fill or hatch to suggest upholstery, maybe nudge it into a grouping with a rug and a lamp block for a richer vignette, and adjust its line weight down slightly relative to the building outline so it recedes properly in the overall composition.

What's worth noticing is that nothing about the underlying block changed, footprint and dimensions stayed identical between both drawings, only the presentation treatment shifted, and that's really the whole discipline in miniature, one accurate piece of geometry, two different visual treatments depending on which audience is going to be looking at it and what they need from the drawing.

Deciding detail level when a project only gets one drawing

Smaller projects don't always get the luxury of a separate working set and competition board, sometimes there's genuinely one drawing that has to satisfy a client's desire for something attractive and a contractor's need for buildable accuracy at the same time, and in that situation detail level becomes a negotiation rather than a clean split. What I do here is keep the accuracy non-negotiable, correct footprints, correct clearances, correct scale, and then add presentation polish only where it doesn't risk obscuring anything a builder would need to read, richer entourage around the edges of the plan, restrained treatment on anything load-bearing or dimensionally critical near the center.

This hybrid approach won't fully satisfy either audience the way a dedicated drawing for each would, but it's a realistic compromise for smaller residential or fast-turnaround jobs where producing two full sheet sets isn't practical, and knowing how to make that compromise deliberately, rather than by accident, is its own useful skill worth having.
