Not everyone needs a full CAD seat just to check a file
A decent chunk of the people who download CAD blocks aren't full-time drafters at all, they're a project manager who needs to confirm a fixture fits, a contractor checking a hardware spec against a drawing, or a small business owner evaluating a furniture layout before committing to floor space. Buying or subscribing to a full AutoCAD seat for that kind of occasional use is overkill, and a free DWG viewer covers a surprising amount of that ground before you ever need to open your wallet.
I've recommended this path to more than a few people who came to me convinced they needed to buy software just to answer what turned out to be a one-time question, and in most of those cases a viewer settled it completely, no purchase necessary.
What a free viewer actually lets you do

Third, check the layer panel to confirm the block isn't buried inside a single generic layer with no useful structure, since that tells you something about how cleanly it was built even before you've inserted it anywhere.
A quick measuring tool check is worth doing too if the viewer supports it, since it lets you confirm the block's rough real world dimensions against a specification sheet or a tape measure result before you've committed any real time to it, which is exactly the kind of question a viewer answers well.
When a viewer is enough, and when it genuinely isn't
If your job is purely reviewing content someone else is drafting into a project, checking that a specification matches, confirming a fixture was placed, a viewer alone might carry you through the entire task without ever needing more. The moment your job shifts to actually producing or editing drawings, inserting blocks yourself, adjusting scale, modifying layers, you've crossed the line where a viewer stops being sufficient, and that's the point where a free trial of a full CAD program, rather than a paid subscription outright, is the smarter next step.
The distinction really is that simple in practice, reviewing content is a viewer task, producing or modifying content is an editing task, and being honest about which one describes your actual day to day work saves you from either under-equipping yourself or overspending on software you'll barely touch.

The path I'd recommend for anyone genuinely unsure how much CAD software they need is to start with a free viewer for pure review work, move to a time-limited free trial of BricsCAD, AutoCAD or a similar program once you actually need to edit or insert content, and only commit to a paid seat once you've confirmed through real use that you'll need this regularly enough to justify it. That sequence costs you nothing extra in time and saves a lot of people from paying for a full year of software they end up opening twice a month.
It's a slower path than just buying the first thing that shows up in a search, sure, but it's the one that actually matches what you spend against what you genuinely need, and that's worth the extra week or two it takes to work through properly.
