How to calibrate how many furniture, tree and figure CAD blocks a floor plan needs at each drawing scale so it never reads empty or overcrowded.

The same plan, three different scales, three different densities
Take the exact same floor plan and plot it at 1:200 for a site context drawing, at 1:100 for a general arrangement sheet, and at 1:50 for a detailed interior presentation, and the amount of entourage that reads correctly is genuinely different at each scale, not just because of legibility but because of what each scale is actually asking the viewer to focus on. I've watched people plot the same fully populated furniture layout across all three scales without adjusting density and get a plan that looks appropriately busy at 1:50 and completely chaotic, an unreadable smear of overlapping blocks, at 1:200.
Density and scale are basically two sides of the same decision, and getting them mismatched is one of the more common reasons a plan that looked great in the modeling window looks wrong the moment it's actually plotted at real sheet scale.
Why plans at smaller scale need fewer, simpler blocks
At 1:200 or smaller, individual furniture pieces stop being individually legible anyway, a sofa set plan block at that scale is a few millimetres on the printed sheet, so detailed furniture blocks with fine internal linework just create visual noise without adding any actual information a viewer can use. What a small-scale plan needs instead is simplified massing, furniture represented as basic filled shapes rather than detailed blocks, trees represented as simple canopy circles without individual branch detail, and a much lower overall entourage count so the eye can still parse the plan's larger organization.
This is where swapping to a simplified block variant, if your library has one, or just using a plainer block with less internal detail genuinely helps, since the goal at this scale is communicating spatial organization and zoning, not furniture selection. If you only have the fully detailed version of a block on hand, a quick trick is exploding a copy and deleting the finer internal lines, keeping just the outer silhouette, which gets you most of the way to a usable small-scale variant without needing to source or draw a separate simplified block from scratch.
Why mid-scale plans need the most careful calibration
Around 1:100 to 1:75 is where density decisions get the trickiest, because this is usually the scale a general arrangement or presentation floor plan is actually plotted at, detailed enough that furniture blocks are individually legible but not so large that you have room to spare. At this range, the layering approach matters most, fixed furniture and major entourage placed at real, accurate density based on actual room function, denser in a living room or open kitchen, noticeably sparser in a hallway or utility space, since uneven density that follows real room use reads as far more believable than uniform density spread evenly across the whole plan.
A rough density check I use at this scale is to look at negative space between blocks, if furniture and entourage blocks are touching or nearly touching across most of the plan it's overcrowded, if there's more than about a metre of consistently empty floor between every piece across an entire room it may be reading as underfurnished, though this varies a lot by room type and design intent.
Why large-scale detail plans can carry more density
At 1:50 or larger, individual blocks have real room to be legible and detailed, and this is where you can afford richer furniture blocks with hatch patterns, more entourage variety, and finer distinctions between similar pieces, a dining chair block that shows its actual leg and back profile rather than a simplified rectangle, for instance. This is also the scale where accessory-level entourage, table settings, small plants, individual light fixtures, genuinely adds to the drawing rather than just adding clutter, because the viewer has enough resolution to actually process that level of detail.
The risk at large scale runs the opposite direction from small scale, it's easy to keep adding detail because there's visual room for it, without stopping to ask whether that additional entourage is adding real information or just filling space because it's available, so the same discipline about intentional placement still applies even when you technically have more room to work with.
A practical way to set density before you start placing blocks
Before placing any entourage, decide your target scale and pick a reference density based on it, roughly sparse and simplified for 1:200 and smaller, moderate and function-driven for 1:75 to 1:150, and detailed and layered for 1:50 and larger, then stick to that reference as you populate the plan rather than eyeballing density room by room without a consistent target. It's also worth doing a final check by literally plotting a test sheet at real scale rather than judging density from a zoomed-in modeling view, since screen zoom is deceptive and a plan that looks correctly dense on screen can plot either sparse or crowded depending on how far you'd zoomed in while placing blocks.
Getting this calibration right the first time saves a real amount of rework too, going back through a fully populated plan to strip out or add entourage after a bad test plot is a much slower fix than setting the right density target from the start and building to it.
A worked example across three scales
Picture the same small apartment plan carried through all three scale bands, at 1:200 for a site context sheet the furniture layer gets simplified to basic filled rectangles for the sofa and bed, tree entourage outside reduced to plain canopy circles, and the whole plan reads as a clean block of space among its neighbors. At 1:100 the same plan carries the sofa set plan block in its normal detailed form, a couple of human figure plan blocks near the kitchen island, and modest entourage that follows real room function without overwhelming any single space.
At 1:50, pulled as a detail sheet of just the living and kitchen area, you'd add texture to the sofa upholstery, individual place settings on a dining table, a wall lamp block with a soft glow fill, all the finer entourage that would have been noise at the smaller scales but genuinely adds to the drawing here. Same plan, same underlying blocks in most cases, three completely different density decisions, and that's really the whole principle in one example.
