Why bed size class drives the whole bedroom layout
A bed is the one piece of furniture in a house that basically decides the room around it, so getting the size class right at the start of a bedroom layout saves you from redrawing everything once the client tells you they actually want a king rather than the queen you assumed. I treat bed size as the first decision on any bedroom plan, before wardrobe position, before the ensuite door swing, because everything else in the room gets measured off the bed's footprint and the clearance around it.
The furniture category on CADBlockDWG carries the size range you need for this, and once you've locked the bed class in you're really just filling the rest of the room around it, a bench or a compact sofa at the foot end for a primary suite, a stool at a dressing corner, sometimes a small workstation tucked into a guest room that doubles as an office.
The size classes and what they actually mean in plan
A single or twin bed typically runs around 900 to 1000mm wide by 1900 to 2000mm long in plan view, and it's the size class for a kid's room, a guest room, or a dorm-style layout where floor space is at a premium. A double or full bed steps up to roughly 1350 to 1400mm wide on the same 1900 to 2000mm length, which is a meaningful jump in the plan footprint even though the length barely changes.
Queen typically lands around 1500 to 1520mm wide, and king is usually in the 1800 to 1830mm range, both still on that same roughly 2000mm length, with some regional and manufacturer variation you should always sanity-check against whatever furniture spec the client is actually buying. The width is really the number that matters for room planning, since it's the width that determines how much clearance you have left down each side of the bed once it's placed.
Clearance rules that actually hold up in practice
The rule of thumb I use is roughly 600 to 700mm of clear walking space on at least one side of the bed, and ideally both sides in a primary suite, plus about 900mm to 1000mm at the foot end if there's a walkway or a bench down there. Wall-to-wall, that means a king bed alone, before you've added a nightstand on either side, needs a room somewhere in the 3.3m to 3.6m range on the width just to breathe properly, and that's before wardrobe doors or an ensuite door swing gets added into the same footprint.
What catches people out is nightstands, because a pair of nightstands at roughly 400 to 500mm each adds real width to the total furniture run even though they're small individually, so I always block them in alongside the bed rather than mentally accounting for them separately. If the room is genuinely tight, dropping from king to queen frees up 280 to 330mm of width, which is often exactly the difference between a room that works and one where the wardrobe doors can't fully open.
Inserting the blocks and keeping scale honest

What goes around the bed
Once the bed class is set, the rest of the primary suite tends to follow its scale, a small bench or a compact sofa at the foot end for a bigger room, a stool at a dressing table for a smaller one. If the suite includes an ensuite, the bed size is a decent proxy for how generous the bathroom can afford to be too, a king bed suite can usually support a double vanity basin comfortably, while a single or double bed guest room is more often paired with a single vanity basin to keep the whole footprint proportionate.
Many guest rooms in 2026 also double as a home office when there's no one staying over, and a compact two-seater workstation block scales into the corner of a single or double bed room without fighting the bed for space, which is worth flagging to clients who are trying to get double duty out of a spare room rather than dedicating it to overnight guests alone.
A note on mattress depth and headboard allowance
One thing that trips up newer drafters is forgetting that the plan-view footprint of a bed block is usually the mattress and frame, not the headboard, and a substantial upholstered headboard can add another 100 to 150mm to the depth of the whole assembly against the wall. If the client has a specific headboard style in mind, it's worth adding that as a rough allowance on top of the base bed block rather than assuming the block's own footprint is the final word, since that extra depth against the headboard wall is exactly the kind of thing that shows up as a clash once furniture actually arrives on site.
I usually keep a simple annotation on the block itself noting which size class it represents, single, double, queen or king, right on the furniture layer, so that anyone else who opens the file later, a colleague, a contractor, a client reviewing the drawing, doesn't have to measure it themselves to know what they're looking at.
Regional size naming, worth double-checking
Bed size names don't always mean the same dimension from one country or manufacturer to the next, and it's worth flagging that early rather than assuming a queen ordered in one market matches a queen block drawn against another market's convention. A UK king is typically narrower than a US king, around 1500mm wide rather than 1800mm, closer to what a US market calls a queen, while a US Twin XL adds roughly 130mm of length over a standard single specifically for taller occupants without changing the width at all. None of this changes how you draft the block itself, since you're always working from the actual dimension rather than the name, but it's exactly the kind of mismatch that causes a furniture order to not match the drawing if nobody catches it early.
My habit on any project involving furniture sourced from a different market than where the project sits is to annotate the bed block with its actual millimeter dimension rather than relying on the size name alone, since the name is really just shorthand and the number is what actually has to fit the room.
