Open-plan office layouts basically come down to repeating a module across the floor plate, and the module you pick, a 2-seater bench, a 4-seater cluster, or a 6-seater pod, decides how efficiently the floor area gets used and how the circulation grid ends up running through the space. I've laid out enough office floors to know that picking the workstation module too early, before checking it against the actual floor plate dimensions, is how you end up with an awkward half-row of desks along one wall that never quite works.

So for instance, three rows of 4-seater clusters running down a floor plate need their own footprint plus two full circulation aisles between them, which on a plate that's 12m deep works out to roughly three 2.4m cluster depths plus two 1.1m aisles, leaving very little slack, and that's exactly the kind of arithmetic that's easy to get wrong on a quick sketch and obvious the moment you've placed true-scale blocks and drawn the aisles in.

Bringing the blocks in and keeping the grid honest

A compact stool at a pantry or breakout counter, and a small sofa in a reception or informal breakout zone, round out the same size-class thinking that runs through the whole floor once the workstation module is settled.

Density targets and how they push the cluster choice

Most workplace briefs I see these days come with a target headcount per square meter, and that number, more than personal taste, is usually what pushes a layout toward smaller 2-seater and 4-seater clusters rather than fewer, larger 6-seater pods, since smaller clusters generally pack a floor plate more densely once you're optimizing for headcount rather than for a handful of prestige pods near the windows. The other detail worth flagging on a sit-stand cluster is cable management at the desk's rear, since a desk that changes height needs cabling with enough slack to move with it, and that's a coordination point worth noting on the drawing for whoever's specifying the electrical and data provision, not just something to leave for the furniture installer to figure out on site.
