Signage is the smallest element with some of the strictest rules

Of everything covered in this series, accessible signage is probably the smallest physical element and, in my experience, one of the most tightly specified, because a sign that's mounted a little too high or too low genuinely fails its purpose for the exact population it's meant to serve, whether that's someone reading a tactile or Braille panel by touch or someone in a wheelchair trying to read wayfinding text at eye level from a seated position. It's easy to treat signage as an afterthought on a floor plan, a symbol dropped near a door with a note pointing to a spec elsewhere, but the mounting height is genuinely load-bearing information that belongs on the drawing, not buried in a separate signage schedule nobody cross-checks against the plan.

Typical mounting height ranges

Tactile and Braille signage, the kind mounted beside a door to identify a room, is commonly specified with its centerline somewhere in the range of 1200 to 1600mm above the finished floor (roughly 48 to 60 inches), a range chosen specifically to sit within comfortable reach for both a standing adult and someone seated in a wheelchair. General wayfinding and directional signage, the kind read visually from a distance rather than touched, typically sits higher, often in a broader range depending on ceiling height and sightlines, but accessible-specific guidance still tends to favor a lower, more consistent mounting height than purely decorative or branding signage might use.

Placement relative to the door is just as specified as height, tactile room-identification signage is commonly required on the latch side of the door rather than the hinge side, at a set distance from the door frame, often somewhere around 100 to 300mm, so a person can locate it reliably by feel while standing clear of the door's swing.

Font size and contrast are worth a brief mention even though they're not strictly a mounting height issue, since a sign mounted at the correct height with text too small or with insufficient contrast against its background still fails the same underlying accessibility intent, so it's common for the same guidance that sets mounting height to also set minimum character height and contrast ratio requirements, and it's worth checking both together rather than treating height as the only variable that matters.

A door that passes its clear opening check but has its identification sign mounted on the wrong side, or well outside the expected height range, still reads as an incomplete accessible entry on a thorough review. Stairwell identification signage, the small plaque confirming a floor number and exit direction at each landing, follows the same tactile height logic and is worth checking with the same rigor, since it's frequently the one accessible sign category that gets left off a schedule entirely because it's tucked inside a stair enclosure rather than facing a public corridor.

Common mistakes with signage placement

The most frequent issue is applying one blanket mounting height to every sign on a project regardless of type, tactile signs, wayfinding panels, and code-required exit signage often have different height rules from each other, so a single project-wide height standard usually undershoots or overshoots at least one category. The second common issue is designing the sign location before the door swing direction is finalized, which occasionally leaves a tactile sign correctly positioned on paper but sitting on what turns out to be the hinge side once the door hardware is actually selected, a mismatch that's cheap to fix on a drawing and expensive to fix after the sign is mounted on site.

Exit signage and other life-safety signage typically follows its own set of rules entirely, driven by fire and building code rather than accessibility guidance specifically, and while there's overlap, both generally favor clear visibility and consistent positioning, it's worth treating exit signage as a separate check from tactile room-identification signage rather than assuming one height standard covers both categories on the same drawing. I usually keep a separate signage schedule split by category, tactile and wayfinding on one list, life-safety and exit signage on another, specifically so a reviewer checking accessibility compliance isn't wading through fire code requirements that live in a different part of the building code entirely.

Symbols and blocks for the drawing

For the accessibility symbol itself, the wheel-chair-accessible and wheel-chair-accessible-2 blocks under building-symbols work well as the graphic element within a sign detail or as a standalone plan symbol marking an accessible entrance, route, or facility. Consistent symbol use across a full set of drawings matters more than it might seem, since a reviewer scanning several sheets for accessible entrances and routes relies on the same symbol appearing wherever an accessible feature exists, and an inconsistent mix of custom-drawn symbols and library blocks across different sheets is a common reason accessible features get missed during a review, not because the feature wasn't designed correctly, but because it wasn't marked the same way everywhere it appeared.
