A car, also known as an automobile, is a vehicle with wheels powered by an engine and used for transportation. It typically seats one to eight people, has four tires, and is primarily used to transport people rather than goods. Cars became widely popular during the 20th century and are an important part of developed economies. The modern car is believed to have been invented in 1886 by Karl Benz with his patent, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. The 1908 Model T, produced by the Ford Motor Company, was one of the first cars that were affordable for the average person. While cars were quickly adopted in the United States, replacing horse-drawn carriages, they took longer to gain acceptance in other parts of the world, particularly in Europe.
